Treasury Bond

A Treasury bond is a long-term debt security issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to help finance the federal government.

Treasury bonds typically have original maturities of more than 10 years and pay fixed interest, known as the coupon, at regular intervals until maturity. At maturity, the investor receives the bond’s face value, assuming the bond is held to maturity and the U.S. government meets its obligations.

In investing, Treasury bonds are widely used as a benchmark for long-term interest rates, portfolio diversification, capital preservation, and valuation.

Suppose an investor purchases a $10,000 Treasury bond with a 4.5% coupon rate.

The investor receives $225 every six months, subject to the bond terms, and receives the $10,000 face value at maturity.

Treasury bonds matter to fundamental investors even if they primarily invest in stocks.

Long-term Treasury yields can influence:

A Treasury bond is issued by the U.S. federal government.

Corporate bonds generally offer higher yields because investors take additional credit risk.

Treasury securities are commonly treated as having very low default risk in U.S. dollar terms.

Treasury Bond Yield to Maturity

Yield to maturity (YTM) estimates the annualized return an investor may earn if the bond is purchased at its current price and held until maturity, assuming scheduled payments are made and simplifying reinvestment assumptions.

If a Treasury bond trades below face value, its yield to maturity may exceed its coupon rate.

If it trades above face value, its yield to maturity may be lower than its coupon rate.

Duration therefore matters even when credit risk is low.

Treasury Bonds and Inflation
