Maintenance capex is the capital spending a company needs to maintain its existing assets, operations, and competitive position.

In fundamental investing, maintenance capex matters because it helps investors estimate how much cash a business must reinvest just to stay in place. A company may report strong operating cash flow, but if a large portion of that cash must be spent replacing equipment, maintaining facilities, updating systems, or preserving service quality, less cash is truly available to owners.

Free cash flow using total capex is:

Free Cash Flow = $500 million - $180 million
Free Cash Flow = $320 million

Owner earnings using only maintenance capex may be:

Owner Earnings = $500 million - $100 million
Owner Earnings = $400 million

The difference matters.

Total free cash flow shows cash after all capital spending. Owner earnings attempts to estimate cash available if the business only spent enough to maintain its current position.
